At Bowdoin College he shared a room Albert Sands Southworth (1811–1894) and went on to become the assistant to Samuel F. B. Morse (1791–1872) who learned how to take Daguerreotypes from Daguerre. He opened a Daguerreotype studio at 5-1/2 Tremont Row in Boston which was the same address as Southworth and worked there until 1843.
