Jonathan Clark was born in Ottawa, Illinois in 1952, and has lived in California since 1963. He holds an MA in Humanities from CSU Dominguez Hills and a BA in Photography from UC Santa Cruz. He worked privately with Wynn Bullock, Frederick Sommer, and George A. Tice. Clark’s photographs are included in many permanent collections, including: George Eastman House; Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; Smithsonian Institution; Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; The Art Museum, Princeton University; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; JGS Foundation, New York; Reva & David Logan Foundation, Chicago; PaceWildensteinMacGill, New York; Detroit Institute of Arts; Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University; Achenbach Foundation, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; University of California, Santa Cruz; and private collections in the USA, Japan, and Europe. He has received two USIA travel grants to Poland and Spain; a fellowship from the Arts Council Silicon Valley; the Western Books Award of Merit; and Photo-eye’s Best Photography Book Design of the Year Award. Solo exhibitions of Clark’s photographs have been held at Photo Gallery International, Tokyo; Triton Museum of Art; New Performance Gallery, San Francisco; and the University of California. A show organized by The American Center, Warsaw, travelled to museums throughout Poland in 1988-90. Clark’s work has been included in scores of group exhibitions including: J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Legion of Honor Museum, San Francisco; Stephen Daiter Gallery, Chicago; San Francisco Center for the Book; Stanford University Library; Center for Photographic Art, Carmel; Photo Gallery International, Tokyo; Scott Nichols Gallery, San Francisco; George Krevsky Gallery, San Francisco; Photographer’s Gallery, Palo Alto; University Museums, University, MS; Society for Contemporary Photography, Kansas City; Napa Art Center; Missouri State University, Warrensburg; and many others. He has held lectures or residencies at Stanford University; University of Barcelona, Spain; Institute for North American Studies, Barcelona; Center for Photographic Art, Carmel; University of West Florida, Pensacola; University of South Florida, Tampa; and the US Consulate, Krakow, Poland. His publications include Prospects of Florence, a photogravure album with text; Frederick Sommer Makes a Cut-Paper, with Frederick Sommer; as well as articles and photographs in various books and journals. |
