John Falconer, British Library
A Biographical Dictionary of 19th Century Photographers in South and South-East Asia

Commercial, India
In partnership of Saché and Westfield, Calcutta, 1865-70; Naini Tal, 1868-81; branches at Mussoorie, Lucknow and Dalhousie in late 1870s. Brother-in-law of the photographer William D. Holmes (qv). Left India c.1882.

J. E. Saché was married to Annie, who died at Lucknow in 1871, where she is buried. The inscription on the grave reads: ‘To the memory of/Annie/the beloved wife of/John Edward Sache/who died of cholera/at Lucknow Nov. 28. 1871/aged 27 years/leaving a sorrowing husband/and two little sons to lament/her irreparable loss.’ [Transcribed from photograph by Saché in Alkazi Collection]. She was presumably his second wife, since his son Alfred (see above) was an adult in 1874. At some time in the 1870s he married Amelia Eliza Charlotte Holmes of Cheltenham. She was born in England 31.5.1850 and died of tubercular disease of the brain at Lucknow on 25.1.1882. Her younger brother was William (James) Dacia Holmes (qv).

(?)Originally from Belgium, but came to India from America. Carte-de-visite inscribed From America on reverse in Photo 1016/1. To check.
