Son of John White (1820-1871), Indian Medical Service 1847-71, Assistant Surgeon, 13th Irregular Cavalry, and Louisa Henrietta. Baptised at Bareilly 8 Mar 1854; educated Rugby (left 1868), Bonn, Cooper’s Hill College 1874.
Entered Indian Public Works Department, Bengal, as Assistant Engineer 17 Nov 1876; temporarily employed on Bihar/Assam Railway 1884; Executive Engineer Aug 1887; posted to Sikkim as Political Officer Jun 1889; Executive Engineer, Sikkim Apr 1890; accompanied Theodore Hoffmann of the photographers Johnston and Hoffmann (qv) on an expedition to the north-eastern base of Kinchenjunga in June 1891;[1] accompanied Younghusband Mission to Tibet 1903-04; Political Agent for Sikkim, Bhutan and Tibetan Affairs 1905-08. Made an important photographic documentation of Sikkim, Bhutan and Tibet from 1890s-1900s. His photographs of Tibet were published by Johnston and Hoffmann as a two volume work of photogravures entitled Tibet and Lhasa (Calcutta, 1906).
