Jeff Scott has always been something of an independent spirit. Born in Los Angeles in the early 1960’s, Scott indulged his inquisitive and creative nature from an early age. With little formal education and a cheap camera in his hand, he set himself on a course that would lead him to become one of the most inspiring young photographers working today. Like so many truly dedicated artists, Scott began taking photographs as a hobby out of pure love for the medium. For years, Scott worked as a Freelance commercial photographer, working in fashion and celebrity photography throughout the world with some of the most prominent names in the industry like Bill King, John Stembler, Douglas Kirkland, and Hollywood film producer Roger Corman. Although this brought him great success and name recognition in the industry, Scott felt that something was still missing in his life. When the riots hit Los Angeles in 1992, Scott’s life took a dramatic turn. Like many other LA residents who had had enough, Scott left California. With camera in hand, he began driving across America with no real plans except to find a more conducive creative environment. Through this journey, Scott rediscovered his creative passion for making art and has never looked back. For the first time in his career, he began capturing images that he felt unveiled his own vision and his own representation of beauty. He has a strong connection with the historic beauty of America and he feels a sense of responsibility when it comes to its preservation. Jeff Scott is not only an artist who is a photographer; he is also an archivist of American culture. Along with Watermark, Jeff Scott’s work has been exhibited at galleries in New York City, Austin, Santa Fe, Pittsburg, Dallas, Atlanta, and Memphis, TN among others. His work resides in many collections throughout America including the Dallas Museum of Art, Elvis Presley Enterprises, Polo Ralph Lauren, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Smithsonian Institution, Disneyland, and the collection of Art Historian, EA Carmean, Jr. Likewise, his work has been featured in publications such as American Photo, Memphis Business Journal, Photo District News (PDN), and Preservation Magazine. This current exhibition of work is in support of his recently released book entitled, Elvis: The Personal Archives (Channel Photographics, NY).
