Between 1951 and 1975 he documented the musicians, bands, clubs, dance halls and the social scene of Kinshasa in The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zaire. He became official photographer for the singer Franco in 1954.
 
Jean Depara is exclusively represented by Maison Revue Noire (Paris).
