Dates:  1935, 13 May -
Born:  Czechoslovakia, Prague
Active:  Czechoslovakia
Gender:  Male
Website:  www.saudek.com

There are artists who walk the tightrope between fine art and titillation and Jan Saudek is one of these. The subject matter, which is frequently sexually explicit, can be visually beautiful and at the same time disturbing - this often means that the body of work as a whole is not as widely recognized as it deserves to be within the overall history of photography.

Printed biographies

The following books are useful starting points to obtain brief biographies but they are not substitutes for the monographs on individual photographers.

• Evans, Martin Marix (Executive ed.) 1995 Contemporary Photographers [Third Edition] (St. James Press - An International Thomson Publishing Company) [Expensive reference work but highly informative.]

• Hoy, Anne H. 1987 Fabrications: Staged, Altered and Appropriated Photographs (New York: Abbeville) p.195-196

Useful printed stuff

If there is an analysis of a single photograph or a useful self portrait I will highlight it here.
