Whilst ill and in pain for a lot of her life Isabella Bird was an inveterate traveller going to the USA, Australia, Korea, Japan, India the Middle East and numerous other locations. Her books on herr travels made her a household name in Britain and in November 1892 she was the first woman inducted into the Royal Geographical Society. She was elected to full membership in 1897 and in the same year she travelled around China and Korea.
