American photojournalist who worked for as a staff photographer for Paris Match and freelanced for other magazines including LIFE, TIME and LOOK, as well as Sports Illustrated and National Geographic On Friday, October 21, 1966 the Welsh village of Aberfan was devastated by the avalanche of a colliery waste tip - the waste demolished the Pantglas Junior School and part of the senior school killing in all 144 people of which 116 were children. I.C. Rapoport arrived a week after the disaster and stayed for seven weeks in the village pub to prepare a photo essay for LIFE magazine that was published in the January 1967 issue. In April 2005 an exhibition of 111 of the images was shown at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.
