Enlisted in the Austro-Hungarian army at 18 and was sent to Albania in 1915. He took up medical studies but abandoned it to take up photography and ethnology. In 1927 he went to Egypt, Sudan and Somalia with Prof. Bernhard Struck of the Dresden Museum of Ethnology. He studied ethnology, geography and psychology in Vienna and these combined with his photographic work and journalism became his career. He travelled widely in the 1930s and his early membership of the Nazi Party brings into question the reasons for his travel as much "research" of this period was used as a cover for amassing geographical and cultural information that would later have military significance. His belongings and many of his negatives were destroyed by fire during the Second World War.
