Approved biography for Gordon A. Curtis
(Courtesy of Christian Peterson)

Gordon A. Curtis was born in Echo, Minnesota, and moved to Minneapolis with his family at age five. He worked at the Williams Hardware Company for almost twenty years, beginning in 1925. Around 1944, he joined the George Ryan Studio, which produced commercial and illustrative photography, and became its vice president in 1957. He also was associated with the McGill Printing Company and General Mills.

Curtis initially joined the Minneapolis Photographic Society, for which he served as vice president in 1936 and subsequently as a judge for competitions. In 1936, he also became a charter member of the Gopher Camera Club, which appointed him their secretary-treasurer in 1941. His pictorial images, made with a 3 1/4-x-4 1/4-inch camera, were exhibited in the late 1930s at pictorial salons in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, and the 1939 New York World’s Fair. They were reproduced in the American Annual of Photography in 1938 and 1941 and the February 1943 issue American Photography. His image Information, a print of which is owned by the institute, illustrated an article on foregrounds inPopular Photography in December 1940.

Curtis, who also pursued painting as a hobby, retired from photography in 1970 and then occasionally consulted for General Mills. He died in Minneapolis on May 13, 1997.
