Names:
Born: Gerda Pohorylle
Dates:  1911 - 1937
Born:  Germany, Stuttgart
Died:  Spain, Brunette
Active:  Spain

Went with Robert Capa to cover the Spanish Civil War - where she was sideswiped by a tank during the battle of Brunete and killed. She was seen as a heroine of the anti-Fascists and her funeral in Paris (Aug 1, 1937) drew thousands including the French writer Louis Aragon and the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Her memorial at Père-Lachaise was designed by the sculptor Alberto Giacometti.

A collection of 206 of her prints was donated by Cornell Capa to the International Center of Photography. An exhibition at the International Center for Photography, New York, USA (September 26, 2007 - January 6, 2008) examined the significance of her work as an early woman battlefield photographer.

Printed biographies

The following books are useful starting points to obtain brief biographies but they are not substitutes for the monographs on individual photographers.

• International Center of Photography 1999 Reflections in a Glass Eye: Works from the International Center of Photography Collection (New York: A Bulfinch Press Book) p.229 [Includes a well written short biography on Gerda Taro with example plate(s) earlier in book.]
