Son of Parke Dobson MD of Killinagh, Westmeath; educated at Royal School, Enniskillen and Trinity College, Dublin (BA 1866, MB and M.CH. 1867, MA 1875, Member of Senate 1875-95); Assistant Surgeon, British Army 1868; Surgeon, 1875; Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel, 1888; retired 1888. Served in Zulu War 1879; sometime in charge of the Museum of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley
 
Surgeon in the British Army. Assistant Surgeon, 1868. Made a number of ethnographical studies of Andaman Islands in 1872.
