She was Swiss, but born in New York of a French father and German mother. Losing her parents In her early life went to stay with relatives in Rome. She studied music and painting in England and Germany. In 1919 she was a student at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin (Akademie der Künste zu Berlin) and this was at a time when the avant-garde was flourishing in Germany with artists including Hans Arp, Adrian Ludwig Richter, John Heartfield andt Lázló Moholy-Nagy. In 1924 moved to Paris, met Fernand Leger and she made some constructivist paintings. She took courses at the Bauhaus and her photography flourished, often incorporating mirrors to construct multiple viewpoints. She opened a photographic studio creating tightly cropped portraits, advertising, photocollages and female nudes.
