Supplemental information

Evelyn Hofer, born in Marburg an der Lahn, Germany, grew up in Switzerland and Spain. Before her parents moved to Mexico, she apprenticed for a few months. First, she worked with the Studio Bettina in Zurich, who did portraits with a 35mm camera. She then worked in Basel with Robert Spreng who worked with an 8 x 10 inch camera. In Mexico she started her career as a freelance photographer.

In 1947 she moved to New York and worked with Alexey Brodovitch for Harper's Bazaar and later for Vogue. Her career took a decisive turn when Mary McCarthy asked her to take the photographs for The Stones of Florence. She used a 4 x 5 inch camera for the project and continued to do so.

Various books in collaboration with outstanding writers followed on cities and countries in Europe and the United States, as well as essays for such publications as Vanity Fair, House and Gardens, Connoisseur, Time-Life Books, Life Magazine, The London Times Sunday Magazine, et al.
