Primarily known as an illustrator and cartoonist he was also a keen amateur photographer who used photographs as the basis for his work. He had his first drawing published in the London satirical magazine Punch in 1867 and went on to become one of their leading illustrators becoming chief cartoonist in 1906. His work was widely published and his drawings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.
In his home studio he would pose members of his family and use them as the basis for his illustrations. On the streets of London close to his house at 18 Stafford Terrace he used a concealed camera like Paul Martin to capture unaware women as they went about their daily lives.Preparing biographies
