Preparing biographies A lawyer in Essex, Copland took up photography as a hobby. During a tour of South America in 1855, he modified the process developed by John Stewart (1814-1887) of using a vacuum pump to prepare paper for negatives. This insured a more complete penetration of the chemicals into the fibers, and Copland adopted it to meet the special demands of working in a hot climate. Nothing else is known of his photographic work or his travels. Roger Taylor & Larry J.
