By the 1880s he was making solo flights and on 5 October 1887 he made his first commercial flight in his new balloon "Urania". He traveled through Europe, Russia, Egypt (1904) and South Africa (1911) making flights that sometimes included the American aerial acrobat Leona Dare doing stunts. He made flights across the Alps in the 1890s and had also taken up aerial photography. His photographs won numerous prizes and were used by geologist Albert Heim as an aid to research.Preparing biographies
