American Pulitzer-Winning photojournalist. He is particularly remembered for his 1968 photograph of the Vietnamese General [Nguyen Ngoc] Loan shooting a prisoner in a Saigon Street at the height of the Vietnam War. Troubled by the event which he always felt was misunderstood as it failed to take in the complexity of the day he visited the ex-general 30 years later in a pizza shop in Virginia and on the wall in a bathroom stall were the words "We know who you are, you fucker!".

There is an award winning documentary on his life "An Unlikely Weapon: The Eddie Adams Story" (2009).

His archive is held in the Eddie Adams Collection, Briscoe Center for American History, The University of Texas at Austin.

Preparing biographies

Biography provided by Focal Press

Over a 45-year career in photojournalism, during which he covered 13 wars and was regularly published worldwide, Adams was renowned for his Pulitzer Prize winning photograph of a South Vietnamese general firing a bullet into a suspected Vietcong prisonerís head that took on mythical proportions in the publicís memory. With his hands tied behind his back, the victimís contorted face at the instant of death transformed the event and became a symbol summarizing the bitter Vietnam legacy.
