Letter from Major H. Hopkinson, Commissioner of Assam, in response to Government request for information and photographs of the peoples of India, writes that ‘at Gowahatty Dr DeFabeck the Military and Civil Surgeon, has offered his services to Government for the preparation of the photographs, but as some of the tribes are rarely seen in Lower Assam, I also propose to solicit the assistance of the Reverend Mr Higgs, the Minister of Dibrooghur....Dr DeFabeck has a magnificent photographic apparatus, but required an addition to his chemicals for so large an order, and I therefore asked him to send me an indent, which I herewith forward, and the items of which I trust the Government will cause to be procured and sent up to him. If Dr DeFabeck’s photographs are only half as good as the productions of his pencil, they should be very superior [there follows a list of photographic chemicals and materials]’.[2]
