Don Jim, a photographer who transcended the world of commercial photography to the visual arts, stands out for his singular attention to transforming everyday images into works of abstract beauty. Tiny bits of metal imbedded in asphalt streets, tar dripping on rooftops, and paint peeling off of old walls took on a unique life in the series of images that Don created.
As a young photographer in the 1950's, Don also spent time at California's amusement parks and beaches. The twirling neon of the rides at the old Long Beach Pike as well as the sideshows and game arcades were favorite sources of material for Don. Along with some unique beach scenes, he also did a distinctive series of the competitions, gymnastics, and crowds at the old Muscle Beach in Santa Monica.
Among a multitude of subject matter, not to be neglected, is a lifelong love of the female nude. Don did many variations of the female form but his last significant project was a series of an opulent female which he shot from above on scaffolding that he built. The figure is beautifully lit as it appears to be floating above it's framed crinkled canvas background.
