Early Daguerreotypist and photographer. Started his photographic career as an assistant in the studio of J.E. Mayall (1813-1901) in London. He worked for a period in Glasgow before taking over ownership of the Mayall studio in 1855. From 1862 he was based at Ryde on the Isle of Wight and became the photographer for Queen Victoria. Later in life he formed a partnership with his assistant Gustav Mullins and formed Hughes & Mullins.
