He walked from Ohio to California (1884-1885) and an account of this was published in his book A Tramp Across the Continent (1892). He was an editor at the Los Angeles Times and learnt photography 1885-1888. He was active in Bolivia (La Paz and Tiawanaku) in 1893. With the ability to write and photograph he became active in both California and New Mexico and was heavily involved in the establishment of the Southwest Museum in Pasadena (1913). He was active in seeking social justice for Native Americans and minorities.Preparing biographies
