Educated at City of London School, Trinity and Caius Colleges, Cambridge; Fellow, Caius College, 1879-85; at the British Museum in Department of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books, 1882-98; Curator of Oriental Literature, Cambridge University Library, 1892; Professor of Sanskrit, University College, London, 1885-1903 and University Lecturer in Sanskrit, Cambridge University 1902-03; travelled in India and Nepal 1884-85 and 1898-99. His A Journey of Literary and Archaeological Research in Nipal and Northern India (1886) is illustrated from his own photographs, reproduced in collotype.
