[8-1] [Charles Ellis Johnson; also worked in partnership with Hiram Sainsbury in Salt Lake City, 80s-90s] "Publisher"; "You See Johnson All Over the World", "Manfr's of Photo Views, Lantern Slides, View Books, Stereoscopic Views, Etc."; "C.E. Johnson, Supt.". "...'s Stereoscopic Views"; "Utah Stereo. Views & Lantern Slides"; "Beautiful California Illustrated, stereo views and lantern Slides", thought to have pub. a group of San Francisco earthquake views in 06. Views scarce; difficult to estimate total output but prob. several hundred stereos. He was an active photographer and worked extensively in UT, but bulk of output was in non-stereo formats. Coverage wide-ranging geographically including many off-beat areas such as Greenland Eskimos, Cuban peasants, etc.; source of these images unknown. Made many flat studio images of stage performers; photographed for a year in Palestine sponsored by lecturer Lydia Mountford. Issued variety of genre and comics, many quite original in treatment, and a rare semi-nude series. Some of these were originally made by the Climax View Co. of New York City, but most were likely by him since he also made nude studies in flat formats. Came to Salt Lake City 82, first in drug business, set up studio prob. in late 80s in partnership with Sainsbury who had worked as a darkroom assistant for C.R. Savage. Liquidated studio 1917. B. 3/21/57, St. Louis, MO; D. 2/21/26, San Jose, CA. Listed in Salt Lake City 60-00.
