One of the few identified African American daguerreotypists. He studied at the Oneida Institute and Kimball Union Academy before entering Dartmouth College in 1843 where he learnt how to take daguerreotypes. In Hartford, Connecticut he opened one of the earliest Daguerreian studios and by the 1850s had a well established business with a wide range of clients. Feeling that he was limited by attitudes and values in 1853 he left the United States for Liberia and opened a Daguerrian studio. He operated travelling studios in Sierra Leone, the Gambia and Senegal but settled in Liberia where he became a prominent citizen both as a sugarcane producer and a politician.
