Preparing biographies Approved biography for Arthur M. Tomlinson (Courtesy of Christian Peterson) | Arthur M. Tomlinson was born in New Jersey and was active as a pictorialist during the late 1920s and 1930s in Chicago. He joined the Fort Dearborn Camera Club, Chicago’s leading pictorial group. He was listed in the May 1929 issue of Light and Shade as a new member of the Pictorial Photographers of America.
Tomlinson exhibited steadily from about 1926 through the 1930s. During this time, he successfully submitted his pictures to salons in Buffalo, Chicago, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Rochester, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle. Foreign salons that accepted his work included those in Paris, Toronto, and New Westminster (British Columbia, Canada). In 1924, he secured the second place prize in a contest sponsored by the Chicago Daily News. American Photography reproduced his images in 1925, 1932, 1937, and 1939.
The institute’s print by Tomlinson depicts an elderly man with a long white beard, wearing a billed cap. Labels on the back indicate that it was shown at the 1936 Third Annual Salon, presented at the Chicago department store Marshall Field and Company, and at the Clinton (Iowa) Camera Club in 1940.
