His affect-less images of mass-produced American products and his Pop Culture portraits used images appropriated from mass media as their source; with stylish simplicity he transformed photographic information, using garishly bright silk-screened colors and flat painted forms to raise banality to monumental status. Aiming for robot-like authorship, Warhol’s work was itself often mass-produced, with assistants creating repetitive, multiple-image silk-screened pieces. Moving fluidly from one medium to another, his prolific output also included the publication of his magazine Interview and over 60 films produced from 1963 to 1968.
