Born:  Germany, Tholey
Died:  Germany, Bad Godesberg

One of the founders of the Photographic Society of Berlin (Photographisches Verein zu Berlin) in 1863 and a pioneer in the use of photography to document German architecture. He was the first person to use the term "Photogrammetry" and founder of the Royal Prussian Photogrammetric Institute (Königlich Preußische Meßbildanstalt). He designed his first camera for photogrammetry in 1867 and used it for the topographic map of Freyburg, Germany, and the architectural drawing of St. Mary’s Church. After his death these images provided a record for the reconstruction of significant buildings following the destruction of the Second World War.
