Explorer of the Canadian North, collector of Inuit art, and for a period director of the Geological Survey of Canada. In 1903-1904 he commanded the sealing steamship "Neptune" during a voyage to the Arctic and acquired a collection of ivories which is now a part of the collections of the Canadian Museum of Civilizations. He took photographs to document his explorations.
