British diarist, poet, barrister and solicitor with a fascination for working class women. He recorded this interest in diaries, sketches and photographs and his motives have at times been questioned. He secretly married Hannah Cullwick a maid-of-all-work who lived with him as a maid whilst at home but as a lady when they went overseas.
His papers are housed at Trinity College, Cambridge.Preparing biographies
