[8-1] *[Elmer & Bert Underwood] "Publisher". Founded in 80, selling views door to door; opened office in Baltimore, 87; next branch in Liverpool, England; moved Balto. office to NYC in 91 as home office, & other branches estab. Bert learned photog. from M. Abel, Menton, France, 91; employed photogs, 97; purchased factory from Henry E. Richmond, Bennington, VT, 01 which made stereoscopes; purchased factory from Strohmyer & Wyman, Arlington, NJ which produced both stereoscopes and views; contracted with Geo. Barker, J.W. Jarvis & Littleton View Co. to make views on demand from negs. provided. Eventually held the largest file on photog. negs. in the world; ceased making stereo views 10, selling negs. to Keystone View Co.; retired & co. reorganized in 31, into 4 independent Cos. Pioneered the concept of "Boxed Sets" of related views. Issued many dozens of series & sets: "The South African War through the Stereoscope", "Russia Through the Stereoscope", "The Pilgrimage to St. Peter's & the Vatican", photog. by Bert, views of Pope Pius X.; many views of Italy, Greece, the Holylands & Eygpt were photog. by Bert; Grand Canyon, Hopi Mesas, Navajo Reservation, President McKinley's visit to Phoenix and Congress Mine in 01, Indians, towns, famous people, mine and cave interiors, ceremonies, etc.; World's Columbian Expo., 93 by Jarvis and Strohmeyer & Wyman; Martinique disaster, 02; Galveston Disaster 9/8/00; bought negs. by C. Bierstadt, Kilburn Bros., & others; by 01, were pub. 25,000 views a day. Most views on standard gray curved mts., very rarely on black CMs, these apparently personal or special images. Elmer B.
