joined emigrant wagon train, left them to
complete the trip on horseback; worked for
several months as a deckhand on river steamers;
had learned some daguerreotyping skill,
purchased gallery of L.H. Wakefield. Active in
masonic lodge, later was sheriff of Multnomah
cty., chief of volunteer fire department. Views
rare , city houses.
