Oct 15, 2008 | Erwin Olaf: Royal Blood | | | The Erwin Olaf portfolio Royal Blood was released in 2000 in an edition of 15 copies and 3 artists proofs. The edition was sold out and on April 8, 2008 at Sotheby's New York a copy was sold for $27,400. The photographs are a provocative examination of royals, or almost royals, who died or were a party to gore soaked events. Princess Di with a Mercedes metal logo embedded in her arm, a blood splattered Jackie O and Julius Ceasar with a dagger in the back make up this typology of tragedy.
A single copy is available for sale for $25,000 until the end of October 2008 and if you are interested let me know and I'll put you in touch with the vendor. PhVTitle | Lightbox | Checklist Exhibition: Erwin Olaf: Royal Blood More about this photographer

The 52nd Be-hold catalog/internet auction of photographs will take place on Thursday, October 30th, starting at 2:00 p.m. (Eastern.)
Appropriate to this dark time there is a large series of photographs dealing with 20th Century wars. Some of the material is very disturbing, yet these are powerful and revealing photographs that show how art and documentation are closely entwined. A major group of offerings deals with Vietnam, These are grouped almost year by year, from the end of the French involvement up to the aftermath in Cambodia. They are mostly period press photographs, with the original “slugs” attached that provide important contexts for the images. The photographers are often credited. Photographs by some of the major photographers such as Sean Flynn, Kyoichi Sawada, Philip Jones Griffith and Don McCullin are offered individually. The WWII photographs include a series of late war reconnaissance photographs used for bombing raids over targets in Japan, Groups of original German press photographs deal with ventures in Africa. They also show Germany’s connections with her future ally Japan. The group includes interesting aviation-related photographs, and scenes from the Russian front. A fascinating photo album is offered that was made from a wing section of a downed German fighter lane by a U.S. bomber squadron. There are also photographs from the Spanish Civil War, and grotesque images of Chinese beheadings, as well as unique photographs showing atrocities from the Japanese war in China before and during WWII.
From an earlier historical period there are a number of photographs dealing with American Indian culture during the period of Western expansion, with some fine portraits of prominent chiefs from the late 19th century. These include a beautiful hand-colored portrait of Geronimo by Erwin, several by F. A. Rinehart, and a fine tissue gravure by E. S. Curtis. Late 19th century and early 20th century American photographs include interesting Adirondack scenes by S. R. Stoddard, and lovely large albumen photographs of scenes in Saratoga. There is a Yosemite scene on boudoir mount by Carleton Watkins published by Taber, as well as a very rare important albumen print on a boudoir mount by Taber showing Chinese coolies embarking from a ship at San Francisco. A good selection of Northwest logging scenes by Darius Kinsey is also offered.
Early 19th century photography includes a select group of daguerreotypes and other early images, including a rare “ivorytype” by Germon of Philadelphia. An important group of cartes de visite is of Count Olympe Aguado and his family. Agaudo was the amateur photographer who first made small format photographs to be used as calling cards. The portraits are by Disderi, who commercially exploited that format. There are early salted paper prints by James Robertson and Robert MacPherson. On a lighter side, there are nude and fashion photographs by Germaine Krull, P. H. Oelman, Horst (and a related self-portrait by Dr. Agha), a touching portrait of Marilyn by Halsman (more personal than those more commonly offered.) Recent nude and fashion photographs are by Irina Ionesco, Jock Sturges and a striking “one of kind” Fresson print by Shiela Metzner. One of the principle offerings is a portfolio by Albert Watson, 12 nude photographs of fashion models made in 1977 in an edition of 12 for Watson’s favored clients.
Be-hold continues to present interesting photographs by major photographers, with works by Atget, Leonard Misonne, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Kertesz, Doisneau and others. There are portraits by Jesse Tarbox Beals, James Van Der Zee, Barbara Morgan, and a series of 1969- 1970 portraits of California photographers including Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, Wynn Bullock and Imogen Cunningham by Joan Murray.
The catalog and web absentee auction will take place on Thursday October 30th at 2:00 (Eastern.) Subscription forms for the catalog, color scans and further information can be found on the be-hold.com web site or by calling 914.423.5806.
All those interested are invited to look over the material in NYC on Friday, October 24th, from 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., on Saturday October 25th, 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Sunday October 26th, 9:00 a.m. – noon. The NYC preview will take place at the Affinia 50 Hotel, 50th
Street at 3d Avenue, with a reception on Friday and Saturday evenings. "> PhVTitle | Lightbox | Checklist Exhibition:

| Oct 14, 2008 | Carte-de-visite | | | For those that are intrigued by Carte-de-visite (CDVs) there is a Yahoo discussion group available at
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/cartes_de_visite/
This group is frequented by notable photo-historians and collectors of CDVs and if you have any questions it is a good place to follow up your research. I thought that it might be useful to show here some of the online exhibitions on Luminous-Lint that include CDVs.
With thanks to all of those that have shared their knowledge so willingly over the last few years. PhVTitle | Lightbox | Checklist Exhibition: Carte de visite

| Sep 30, 2008 | Norman McBeath: City Stories | | | Norman McBeath is an independent photographer, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. His work focuses on people and places. The National Portrait Galleries in Edinburgh and London have fifty of his portraits in their permanent collections. This online exhibition of his series City Stories has been published in Norman McBeath "City Stories" (Easel Press, 2008, ISBN 978-0-9552859-2-9).
Award-winning novelist Janice Galloway has kindly provided an introduction to this exhibition. Her introduction begins with Nothing is strange. And everything is. which is a fitting description of street photography - which encompasses banal moments, accidental discoveries and juxtapositions along with the fractions of a second that become iconic images of an age. As Janice Galloway concludes:
McBeath’s images jostle, suggest competing interpretations, bring evocations to the surface that pop and melt like bubbles. Within them, nothing is strange. And everything is. QED. The complexity of what we sloppily call “everyday life” is no secret, yet it’s seldom taken this seriously, its counterpoints made central, not just a quirky backdrop to a more cleanly-interpreted foreground. This rich black and white gallery permits the reframing of the stage set we walk through every day, helping us grasp the full remarkableness of the ordinary.
Thanks to Norman McBeath and Janice Galloway for their assistance with this online exhibition. PhVTitle | Lightbox | Checklist Exhibition: Norman McBeath: City Stories More about this photographer

| Sep 17, 2008 | Lori Nix | | | Lori Nix creates worlds and stories and then photographs them. As Lori writes in her introduction:
"My photos begin as highly detailed dioramas I construct from everyday items such as wood, plaster, and foam as well as scale model supplies. I build them with one eye towards reality and creating a believable landscape. Drawing on my surroundings for inspiration, I want to create a world that is familiar to the viewer, with recognize able details, that causes them to believe that it is a legitimate place. I want to fool the viewer, but only up to a point. I also want them to discover, in the course of looking at the photograph, that it is an imagined environment."
My thanks to Lori for all her help with this online exhibition. PhVTitle | Lightbox | Checklist Exhibition: Lori Nix More about this photographer

| Sep 16, 2008 | Peter Feldstein & Stephen G. Bloom: The Oxford Project | | | "In 1984, Peter Feldstein set out to photograph every resident of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). Twenty years later, he did it again. But this time those same residents did more than pose. With extraordinary honesty, they shared their memories, fantasies, failures, secrets and fears with writer Stephen G. Bloom. The result is a riveting collection of personal stories and portraits that tell much more than the tale of one small Midwestern town. Because beneath Oxford’s everyday surface, lives a complex and wondrous community that embodies the American spirit."
Thanks to Peter Feldstein, Stephen G. Bloom and Lena Tabori of Welcome Books for their assistance with this exhibition. PhVTitle | Lightbox | Checklist Exhibition: Peter Feldstein: The Oxford Project More about this photographer

| Sep 15, 2008 | Rick Dingus: An Evolving Retrospective | | | Rick Dingus in this online exhibition explores the nature of place as he describes in his introduction.
"I photograph places that interest me because they contain details that pose questions related to a broadly defined notion of "Landscape." I'm interested in any situation that prompts contemplation of the curiously complex connections we share with the larger patterns of existence. Remote wilderness and rural settings, vernacular byways, urban environments, ancient pathways, ruins, historic, mythic and spiritual pilgrimage sites, scientific and technological research facilities, folk and professional museums, shrines, collections, displays, and dioramas all fascinate me because these places reflect individual and collective responses, understandings, and a myriad of relationships to the same world I live in. I've shifted frames of reference continually, seeking new insights that might be hidden behind the details that are in plain view."
Thanks to Rick Dingus for his enthusiasm and assistance with this exhibition. PhVTitle | Lightbox | Checklist Exhibition: Rick Dingus: An Evolving Retrospective More about this photographer

Would you like to share your passion with fellow enthusiasts?
Well read on.... if you have a collection that relates to any area of the history of photography I'm interested.
- Photographs of combs, mountaineers and mountaineering, famous aviators, scientific equipment, feet or any other subject
- Studio stamps, signatures and portraits of photographers
- Early photographically illustrated books and exhibition catalogs
- The backs of carte-de-visites and cabinet cards
- Photographs of a particular region, locality or building

Whatever your interest in photography is, and even if your partner and friends no longer want to hear about it, I do. If you have fellow enthusiasts who would like to work together to pool knowledge and examples even better. For some online exhibitions on Luminous-Lint we bring together teams of people to work collaboratively and that is rewarding for everyone.
I'll need a set of images, a caption list and a short introduction. It's a very straight forward process - so no matter what aspect of photography you are passionate and knowledgeable about send me your idea for an exhibition and we'll discuss it.
Best,
Alan
