Apr 19, 2008 Barnaby Hall: The Art of the Book Cover

ThumbnailThumbnailThumbnail

English-Born photographer Barnaby Hall has won numerous awards for his photographs used in book covers and we decided to include an exhibition of these. What we wanted to do was include the final book covers along with the photograph on which it was based to highlight the evolution of an idea.

I rather like the trivia that the cover for James Fenimore Cooper "Last Of The Mohicans" (The Modern Library Classics, 1998) is actually a passport portrait of Barnaby Hall taken by a “lamby lamby” (street photographer) in Rio de Janeiro in 1972.

Thanks to Barnaby and all the art directors, designers and publishers involved.

Apr 17, 2008 Rolf Koppel: Male Nudes

ThumbnailThumbnailThumbnail

Some time ago I included an exhibition of the still life work of Rolf Koppel and this exhibition examines some of his nude studies. These explorations of the self are included in several of his monographs including:

Rolf Koppel Soliloquy (Fotohof, 2000) with an essay by Peter Weiermair

Rolf Koppel Will (Casa Editice Tutti i Santi, 2002) edited by Peter Weiermair. (This book explores the intense relationship between the photographer and his model Will Light Johnson)

Rolf Koppel Photographs 1976 > 2003 (Allerheiligenpresse, 2004) edited by Peter Weiermair.

I'd like to thank Rolf for his permission to include this exhibition.

Apr 16, 2008 Luminous-Lint goes from Strength to Strength
Thanks for all your support and the website is building up well with historic, rare and contemporary works and you all seem to like it which is great news. This year we've had well in excess of 1.5 million page views just of the gallery, dealer, photographer and online-exhibition pages which is pretty amazing.

One new feature that is coming soon includes regional indexes for photographers - this will be a useful resource for photo-historians, collectors and researchers who want to locate 19th century photographers who worked in Sri Lanka such as Charles Scowen.

We've come a long way together and I'm looking forward to other ways I can assist this diverse community as this website continues to improve.

Best wishes,
alan@luminous-lint.com

Apr 16, 2008 André Gunthert stepping down as director of Société française de photographie (SFP)
 Chers amis,

Apr 11, 2008 Portraits: Parts of body - Hands

ThumbnailThumbnailThumbnail

"Made by hand, the craft object bears the fingerprints, real or metaphorical, of the person who fashioned it. These fingerprints are not the equivalent of the artist's signature, for they are not a name. Nor are they a mark or a brand. They are a sign: the almost invisible scar commemorating our original brotherhood or sisterhood. Made by hand, the craft object is made for hands. Not only can we see it, we can also finger it, feel it. We see the work of art but we do not touch it. The religious taboo that forbids us to touch saints - "you'll burn your hands if you touch the Tabernacle," we were told as children - also applies to paintings and sculpture."

Octavio Paz (b. 1914), Mexican poet, in his essay "Seeing and Using: Art and Craftsmanship" in Convergences: Essays on Art and Literature, (Harcourt Brace, 1987).
