Cec Bown (1938, 1 January - ) was born - Australia, Sydney. Australian monochrome photographer and bromoilist. Kevin Dingman (1964, 1 January - ) was born - US, IA, St. Paul. Contemporary bromoilist. Kawada Kikuji (1933, 1 January - ) was born - Japan, Ibaragi Prefecture [Ibaraki Prefecture]. Japanese freelance photographer - more recently his works have concentrated on astronomy as in his 1995 book ‘The Last Cosmology‘. Alfred Stieglitz (1864, 1 January - 1946, 13 July) was born - US, NJ, Hoboken. Stieglitz revolutionized American photography, opening The Little Galleries in New York, showing art and photography in juxtaposition, creating the seminal photography publication Camera Work, encouraging young photographers like Steichen, Strand and Weston and creating work which gave photography the serious sophistication and the class it had never had before. It is hard to imagine in what direction photography would have gone had Stieglitz not been involved. He had the energy, the drive, the artistic vision and the determination of ten men and the enemies to prove it.
[Courtesy of Pam Roberts] Edward Weston (1886, 24 March - 1958, 1 January) died. American landscape, still-life and nude photographer with a fascinating private life. Like Steichen before him, he experimented with photographing everyday objects, vegetables, nudes, dunes, using lighting and camera angle to show the item in a completely new light. He worked for the government on the Farm Security Administration project and set up the f/64 Group.
