R.L. Midgley Sights in Boston and Suburbs, or Guide to the Stranger (Boston: John P. Jewett & Company, 1856)

Daguerreotypes & Crystalotypes by Whipple & Black, at 96 Washington Street, Boston.

Strangers are invited to call at their spacious and elegant rooms and view the large and interesting collection of Daguerreotypes, Photographs, and Crystalotypes of the most distinguished men of our country, prominent citizens, and splendid views from every part of the Union. We are sure a leisure hour can hardly be more agreeably spent than in viewing them.

We have had much experience in the different branches of the profession, being among the first to practise the Photographic Art, and we have received Medals at every institution where exhibited for superiority of workmanship and artistic effect. Mr. Whipple is the discoverer of the Crystalotype, a process by which Daguerreotypes are first taken on glass and then transferred to paper. By this means views of city or country residences, portraits, copies of paintings, statuary, &c., are multiplied with unrivalled accuracy, and with the same readiness as from a steel or copper engraving, and from Daguerreotypes we are enabled to reproduce portraits of deceased persons in oil colors and of the size of life. We attend to our patrons in person, and spare no pains or effort to produce not only pleasing likenesses, but that they may be executed in the highest order of art.
