Curatorial description (Accessed: 21 August 2021)
Hand-coloured daguerreotype of Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He is sitting with his body turned to the left but his head turned to the right. He is wearing a dark suit and holding a walking cane in his right hand. The daguerreotype is mounted in a brown leather case which is made to look like a book. 'L.C 1852' is embossed in gold on the lid.

Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was a first cousin of both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

It is likely that this is the daguerreotype described as 'of Pr Leopold of Saxe Coburg & Gotha / by Claudet. april 1852' in the List of Daguerreotypes belonging to Her Majesty (Royal Archives, Windsor, VIC/ADDC04/2).
