Carrick was an Edinburgh-born photographer who devoted much of his career portraying members of Russia's lower classes. He was one of the first photographers to capture the Russian countryside and its people. In the early 1860s, he travelled as far as Finland, where this photograph was taken, and later along the 'Mother Volga'.
