Photograph of the memorial to commemorate the death of Napoléon, Prince Imperial of the French. There are two European men standing in the foreground, one holding a long net and the other holding a spade. Behind them there is a memorial cross to the far left, surrounded by a low stone wall. European and Zulu men are gathered in small groups, many holding tools. There are hills in the distance. Napoléon, Prince Imperial of the French served with the British army during the Anglo-Zulu War. He was killed in a skirmish with Zulu fighters in June 1879. Shortly afterwards his godmother Queen Victoria ordered a memorial to be built on the site of his death.
