E. J. Brill, Leiden. 1888. 2 Vols., text and Atlas with collotype plates by Kassian Cephas. Text volume, quarto (25 by 175mm.) original red cloth, gilt lettering and decoration on front boards. 63pp. Atlas-volume in-folio (385 by 510mm.) original red cloth, gilt lettering, 17 collotypes by Kassian Cephas, all measuring 180 by 270mm., mounted on original card with numbers IA to XVI, each wrapped in doubled paper sheet with descriptions, all in very good condition with good tonal range. Text volume with slight rodent damage, Atlas volume with slight soiling to surface and worn edges, otherwise in fine condition.

A famous and very rare collection in two parts of dance scenes from the court of Jogyakarta Craton-court. The folio contains 17 collotypes taken by Kassian Cephas in 1884. The accompanying description (in Dutch), published in a seperate quarto, by J. Groneman, discusses each plate in detail. The collotypes in this special large edition with red cloth are the same size as those in the smaller green clothed edition (also with twenty four collotypes). It is very rare to have both the text and atlas volumes of this special edition, and as far as we know there have been no green editions of the text quarto. Kassian Cephas (1845-1912) was a pioneer in photography is southeast Asia. As an indigenous Javanese, he served as official photographer to the Sultans of Jogyakarta, documenting the royal family and court ceremonies.
