Photograph of a pontoon bridge across the Indus River at Attock. Boats are moored alongside the bridge on both sides. On the shore in the foreground men are moving large tree trunks. Attock Fort is on a hillside beyond the river. Beside it to the left there is a small church. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
