Photograph which forms the left section of a panoramic picture of a British military camp with the Safed Koh mountain range behind. The other in the series is 2501401. There are rows of tents on the open plain in the foreground. The mountains extend into the distance behind, their peaks covered with snow. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
