Macpherson is standing at the centre of the group wearing military uniform and holding a helmet with a feather plume in his right hand. There are two soldiers standing to either side of him, wearing a variety of uniforms. There is a painted backdrop of the pyramids behind. Major-General Sir Herbert Taylor Macpherson received the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Indian Mutiny. He later served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army.
