This portrait of Miss Elizabeth (Betsy) Etty was probably made on the same day that she and two of her uncles, the famous painter William Etty and his elder brother, Charles, also sat for portraits by the Scottish photographic team of David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson. Etty and Hill knew each other through the Royal Society of Artists, having been correspondents since at least 1830. William Etty and his niece happened to be in Edinburgh on 16 and 17 October in 1844, and it was then that they and Captain Charles Etty had their portraits made. Betsy, the fifth child of William's younger brother, John, and his wife, Susannah, was born on 21 November in 1801 in the city of York. She, along with her sisters and brother, would often visit their uncle William, who also lived in York and frequently took them to view paintings at the National Gallery in London.
