Mario Giacomelli's series 'Metamorfosi della terra' (Metamorphisis of the Land) was taken between 1960 and 1980 at Monte Lago, Vallone and Arcevia and at Sant' Angelo di Senigallia between 1955 and 1968, from which the image offered here dates. This work is different from his other landscape series 'Presa di conscienza sulla natura' (On Being Aware of Nature) in that it shows the wounds inflicted on the land by labor or neglect. It is difficult to date the images precisely. Many images are taken from the air but also by land and by sea. A trip to Bilbao in the 1970s gave Giacomelli the idea to shoot from above. These images are not straightforward landscapes and often appear as abstract, graphic designs.
