Photograph of guns captured from the Fort of Ali Masjid stored at a military camp on Shagai Heights, a plateau at the edge of the Khyber Pass. In the foreground there are two rows of large gun carriages with a row of smaller gun carriages in front. Soldiers are standing around the guns and there is a camp behind where horses are grazing outside the tents. There are mountains behind. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
