| Florence Henri Composition No. 12 1929 (ca) Gelatin silver print 9 3/16 x 14 3/4 ins Galleria Martini & Ronchetti LL/33228 Composition No. 12 embodied what Moholy called a "new space, which was to be produced through the relations of the elemental material of visual expression a new space created with light directly. . . . The surface becomes a part of the atmospheric background; it sucks up light phenomena produced outside of itself a vivid contrast to the classical conception of the picture, the illusion of an open window . . . It represents the mastery of the surface, not for atmospheric, but for plastic spatial ends."
