"The objects I had in view when - in spite of the dangers, some real, some imaginary - I determined to visit Cyprus were two-fold. The first was to obtain a series of photographs of the island and its people; and the second to so supplement these pictures by personal observation as to present to the public a faithful reproduction of what I saw and heard during my travels." John Thomson in 'Through Cyprus with the Camera in the Autumn of 1878' (1879)

In Thomson's day, Cyprus had only recently been taken over by Britain, and the intrepid explorer expressed some foreboding before setting out on his journey to the island. (John Hannavy, 2008)

This photograph was included in the book by John Hannavy "Great Photographic Journeys - in the footsteps of Pioneer British Photographers" (Dewi Lewis Publishing, 2008 - # ISBN-10: 1904587542, # ISBN-13: 978-1904587545)
