Biographical/Historical note: On close examination it can be seen that Ned Kelly's head has been pasted over an earlier photograph of James Nesbitt. Information from Warwick Reeder, January 1997. This is confirmed by the police photograph of Nesbitt, taken in 1873, from his Prison Record (Public Record Office of Victoria) and published in Stand and Deliver by Allan M. Nixon (Lothian Books, 1991 page 130). The distinctive tartan scarf can easily be seen. A wood engraving based on this photograph was published in the Australasian Sketcher (22 November 1879 page 136) at the time of the capture of Moonlite's Gang at Wantabadgery.
